Die Fläche: Design and Lettering of the Vienna Secession, 1902–1911

Edited by Elisabeth Schmuttermeier and Christian Witt-Dörring The Wiener Werkstätte or Vienna Workshops was founded in 1903 by architect Josef Hoffmann and artist Koloman Moser. In 1907, the Wiener Werkstätte began publishing a numbered series of postcards, which would ultimately include nearly 1,000 cards. Many of them were designed to celebrate holidays, such as Christmas and Easter. Fashion, both contemporary and historical, became another popular subject, along with humorous topics and favorite tourist spots of the period. All of the major designers who worked for the firm were contributors in this medium including Josef Hoffmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and Dagobert Peche. Other noteworthy artists who were active in this area whose names may be less familiar include Moriz Jung, Rudolf Kalvach, Mela Koehler, and Maria Likarz, among others. This catalog raisonné accompanies the first major museum exhibition ever held in the United States devoted exclusively to the postcards produced by the Wiener Werkstätte. The work in the exhibition is drawn exclusively from The Leonard A. Lauder Collection and coincides with the gift of nearly 1,000 of the cards to the Neue Galerie. A selection of these cards will be on view on a regular basis as part of the museum's permanent collection. Please note that Rare/Out-of-Print titles are very limited in stock. Postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte: A Catalogue Raisonné

By Christian Witt-Dorring and Janis StaggsThe Wiener Werkstätte, founded by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Fritz Waerndorfer, was an artists’ and craftsmen’s collective that existed in Vienna from 1903 until 1932. The artists’ goal was to bring high-quality design and craft into all areas of life and to elevate everyday objects into pieces of art. During that time, the collective produced items in a variety of media including ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry, metalwork, and textiles. The Wiener Werkstätte style influenced generations of architects from Bauhaus to Art Deco. This book features the work of well-known Wiener Werkstätte members such as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Dagobert Peche along with lesser known designers such as Gudrun Baudisch, Carl Otto Czeschka, and Ugo Zovetti. It also includes in-depth essays that explore the Wiener Werkstätte’s long history and legacy.Hardcover577 pagesNeue Galerie New YorkPrestel, 20179.5 x 2.2 x 11.5 inchesISBN 9783791357164Neue Galerie Exhibition Catalogue, Jewelry, Applied Arts, Design

Wiener Werkstätte Jewelry

By Franco Deboni Through the peak period of Art Deco creativity in the 1920s, many artists and studios produced portfolios of original designs for commercial use. Often these original works went unsigned and, after inspiring their limited, exclusive audience, disappeared. Here is one such portfolio (most likely French or German, 1925‒30) recently rediscovered and now reproduced as an original and probably unique document of the Art Deco years. Over 800 royalty-free jewelry designs and motifs dazzle with Art Deco invention: buckles, buttons, clips, belts, mirrors, pendants, cigarette cases, rings, chains, necklaces, watchbands, brooches, studs, clusters of intricate, delicate, sharp-edged Art Deco charms, many graced with the too-often forgotten humor and wit lying just beneath the geometry.Jewelry designers, collectors of Art Deco, and period specialists will find equal amounts of inspiration and aesthetic delight in this rare, precisely executed collection of fresh, authentic Art Deco design, now rescued from oblivion. Artists, designers, and crafters will find it a valuable Art Deco treasury. Paperback80 pagesDover Publications, 19828.3 x 0.2 x 11.2 inchesISBN 9780486243467Jewelry, Art Deco

The elegant, royalty-free illustrations of this collection, reprinted in their original colors from a rare German edition, offer authentic representations of the craftsmanship and imaginative qualities involved in the creation of Art Nouveau jewelry. This sumptuous assortment presents more than 300 pendants, combs, rings, bracelets, brooches, buttons, clasps, and earrings.

By Romy Cockx, Robin Schuldenfrei and Lara Steinhäußer Exploring fashion and interior design through a gender lens, from the Victorian era to contemporary designers like Martin Margiela and Raf Simons Fashion & Interiors: A Gendered Affair explores the relationship between fashion and interiors from a gender perspective. In the second half of the nineteenth century, bourgeois ladies embellished both their bodies and their homes with drapes, fringing and ruches. Male designers such as Henry van de Velde and Josef Hoffmann waged war on that decorative excess and designed women’s clothing and interiors as part of a well-thought-out total work of art. Fashion designers Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin drew inspiration from this approach and used interior design to create a powerful brand for their fashion houses. The impact of clothing also resonated with modernist (interior) architects such as Adolf Loos, Lilly Reich and Le Corbusier. This complex history is reflected in surprising ways in the visual language and creations of contemporary fashion designers such as Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela, and Raf Simons. Tracing Wiener Werkstätte Textiles

By Rebecca Houze "Drawing on a wide variety of contemporary sources and extensive illustrations, and underpinned by sustained, carefully articulated arguments, this book makes a convincing case that notwithstanding the problematics of dress and design reform in Austria and Hungary during the Dual Monarchy, 'clothing motivated programs of change… Throughout the book, the range of sources and illustrations, careful argument, confident style, and the synthesis of fashion, costume, and textiles located within the wider context of design reform ensures that this book is an excellent contribution to scholarship in the field.'"—Journal of Design History Filling a critical gap in Vienna 1900 studies, this book offers a new reading of fin-de-siècle culture in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy by looking at the unusual and widespread preoccupation with embroidery, fabrics, clothing, and fashion - both literally and metaphorically. The author resurrects lesser known critics, practitioners, and curators from obscurity, while also discussing the textile interests of better known figures, notably Gottfried Semper and Alois Riegl. Spanning the 50-year life of the Dual Monarchy, this study uncovers new territory in the history of art history, insists on the crucial place of women within modernism, and broadens the cultural history of Habsburg Central Europe by revealing the complex relationships among art history, women, and Austria-Hungary. Rebecca Houze surveys a wide range of materials, from craft and folk art to industrial design, and includes overlooked sources-from fashion magazines to World's Fair maps, from exhibition catalogues to museum lectures, from feminist journals to ethnographic collections. Restoring women to their place at the intersection of intellectual and artistic debates of the time, this book weaves together discourses of the academic, scientific, and commercial design communities with middle-class life as expressed through popular culture.Contents: Introduction. Edited by Alana Shapira and Anne-Katrin Rossberg Gestalterinnen played a decisive role in the development of modernism in Vienna. This publication presents new research on women designers, ceramicists, fashion designers, graphic artists, garden architects, photographers, art historians and patrons. The contributions illuminate the eminent importance of these women for Viennese modernism and show how traditional role models were challenged during the interwar period. The Gestalterinnen confronted existing prejudices and created new visual languages in order to forge successful careers. By Adolf Loos Throughout his life Adolf Loos raised his eloquent voice against the squandering of fine materials, frivolous ornamentation and unnecessary embellishments. His admirers consider him to be the inspiration for all modern architecture. Yet, few are acquainted with his amusing, incisive, critical and philosophical literary work reflecting on applied design and the essence of clothing in fin de siècle Vienna. Adolf Loos often had a radical, yet innovative outlook on life that made him such a nuisance for many of his contemporaries. His provocative musings on many subjects portray him as a man of varied interests and intellectual refinement as well as possessing a keen sense of style, which still has value today. Why A Man Should Be Well Dressed

By Christopher Long Christopher Long’s latest volume of essays on the prestigious 19th-century architect, essayist and progenitor of modernism. Architectural historian and leading voice on Adolf Loos, Christopher Long returns with another commentary on the Austrian pioneer of modern architecture. Adolf Loos (1870–1933), an opponent of ornamentation on buildings, designed buildings in Vienna that contrasted with the popular Art Nouveau and Secession styles. In this anthology of eight essays, Long takes on the meanings of Loos’ writings and design work, the cultural world in which he was embedded, and how he was regarded by the critics and public. Long exposes and explodes old myths about Loos, fostering in the process a new, brilliant and compelling view of one of modern architecture’s key protagonists. By Pasquale Gagliardi, Valerio Terraroli, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Andreas Vass, and Rainald Franz. The second catalog dedicated to international developments in twentieth-century glass, after Glass from Finland in the Bischofberger Collection. Published in collaboration with the MAK Vienna and LE STANZE DEL VETRO on the occasion of the exhibition in Venice, this volume presents over 300 works from the collection of the MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art in Vienna and private collections. It focuses, for the first time, on the history of glassmaking in Austria from 1900 to 1937, a period spanning the last decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the First Republic. In the early twentieth-century, a group of young architects, designers, and fine arts and architecture students developed a special interest in the process of glassmaking. They paved the way to the first pioneering developments in twentieth-century glass production as they gained a thorough understanding of the material. The collaboration between architects and designers created the style of Viennese glass, found in new projects such as the Wiener Werkstätte or the Austrian Werkbund. Edited by Markus Winter and Don Freeman Berlin Deko surveys early 20th-century German furniture design, highlighting diverse styles, key figures, and Berlin’s role as a creative hub between 1910 and 1930. Berlin Deko is the first comprehensive English survey of early twentieth-century German and Central European furniture design to move beyond the notion of a linear development of styles between Jugendstil and Bauhaus. It explores the period between 1910 and 1930, revealing a diverse continuum of styles, including the overlooked “Expressionist Rococo” that flourished in Berlin. The book highlights Berlin’s role as a center for furniture and interior design that attracted international artists. Key figures such as Leo Nachtlicht, Oskar Kaufmann, Bruno Paul, Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot, Paul Thiersch, Emil Fahrenkamp, Eduard Pfeiffer, and Lajos Kozma played important roles. Berlin Deko re-examines and celebrates Berlin’s legacy as a creative center, revealing a richer, more nuanced narrative of German design history. Published after the First World War when German art was at its height of decadence and debauchery, the magazine included a wide selection of new and reprinted stories by both German-language and foreign writers ranging from suspense and terror to crime and the eerily-erotic. While the literary content is historically significant, many of the stories have been reprinted in multiple places across the last century; we have focused our attention on what has gone undocumented: the incredible artworks that illustrated these stories. The artworks range from peculiar medieval etchings to occult woodblocks to expressionist visions- all balancing the romantic and the gothic with hyper-elegant sophistication. Wicked Pursuits: The Art of Der Orchideengarten Vol. 8

By James M. BradburneWhen a puppet breaks the "fourth wall"- that is, the capacity for emotional involvement of a successful performance - it wins the trust of the audience, giving the show the power to blur the division between stage and world, between art and life. Understanding this were those artists, leading figures in the world of Art and Figure Theater, who looked to "creative play" as a source of aesthetic inspiration to seek new modes of visual expression. This volume and the accompanying exhibition Puppets and the Avantgarde. Picasso - Depero - Klee - Sarzi, curated by James M. Bradburne - from November 2023 at the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia - open up a space for the imagination by tracing the cultural and social role of puppets in the European avant-garde at the beginning of the 20th century. An itinerary that places alongside the great names of Pablo Picasso, Fortunato Depero and Paul Klee, that of Otello Sarzi, a poetic figure who marked the artistic and educational history of Reggio Emilia. In order to understand their appeal, puppets are examined in the broadest sense: puppets operated from above – common in the palaces of princes and the drawing rooms of the bourgeoisie; and puppets manipulated from below – inhabitants of the popular world of fairs and the public square.Hardcover324 pagesText in Italian and EnglishIdea Books, 202325.5 x 21.5 cmISBN 9791254930762Movements, Avant-Garde

Puppets and the Avantgarde | Marionette e Avan Guardia

By Magdalena DrosteIn a fleeting fourteen year period, sandwiched between two world wars, Germany’s Bauhaus school of art and design changed the face of modernity. With utopian ideals for the future, the school developed a pioneering fusion of fine art, craftsmanship, and technology to be applied across painting, sculpture, design, architecture, film, photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre, and installation. As much an intense personal community as a publicly minded collective, the Bauhaus was first founded by Walter Gropius (1883–1969), and counted Josef and Anni Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Gunta Stölzl, Marianne Brandt and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe among its members. Between its three successive locations in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, the school fostered charismatic and creative exchange between teachers and students, all varied in their artistic styles and preferences, but united in their idealism and their interest in a “total” work of art across different practices and media. This book celebrates the adventurous innovation of the Bauhaus movement, both as a trailblazer in the development of modernism, and as a paradigm of art education, where an all-encompassing freedom of creative expression and cutting-edge ideas led to functional and beautiful creations.Hardcover96 pagesTaschen, 20158.4 x 0.5 x 10.4 inchesISBN 9783836560146Applied Arts, Bauhaus

By Frank Whitford"Concise, well constructed, entertaining and eminently readable"—Architects’ Journal"A much needed and very lucid account"—The Times Educational SupplementThe aesthetic of our contemporary environment, including everything from housing developments to furniture and websites, is partly the result of a school of art and design founded in Germany in 1919, the Bauhaus. While in operation for only fourteen years before being shut down by the Nazis in 1933, the school left an indelible mark on design as well as the practice of art education throughout the world.Placing the Bauhaus into its socio-historic context, Frank Whitford traces the ideas behind the school’s conception and describes its teaching methods. He examines the activities of the teachers, who included artists as eminent as Paul Klee, Josef Albers and Wassily Kandinsky, and the daily lives of the students. This remains the most accessible and highly illustrated introduction to perhaps the most significant design movement of the last hundred years. Bauhaus (World of Art)

Edited by Elizabeth Otto and Patrick Rössler “Bauhaus Bodies addresses gender issues more broadly, with fourteen essays by established and newer scholars on body culture, spirituality, dance, androgyny, clothing, experimental photography, and the unsung contributions of Bauhaus wives and female wall painters.” ―Woman's Art Journal“Dispensing with the usual focus on a monolithic school and its leaders, this collection will prove an indispensable resource for investigating the Bauhaus' immediate social impact, historical context, and far-reaching historical implications.” ―CHOICEA century after the Bauhaus's founding in 1919, this book reassesses it as more than a highly influential art, architecture, and design school. In myriad ways, emerging ideas about the body in relation to health, movement, gender, and sexuality were at the heart of art and life at the school. Bauhaus Bodies reassesses the work of both well-known Bauhaus members and those who have unjustifiably escaped scholarly scrutiny, its women in particular. In fourteen original, cutting-edge essays by established experts and emerging scholars, this book reveals how Bauhaus artists challenged traditional ideas about bodies and gender. Written to appeal to students, scholars, and the broad public, Bauhaus Bodies will be essential reading for anyone interested in modern art, architecture, design history, and gender studies; it will define conversations and debates during the 2019 centenary of the Bauhaus's founding and beyond.Paperback392 pages | 12 color and 110 black-and-white illustrationsBloomsbury Publishing, 20199 x 6 inchesISBN 9781501344787Bauhaus History, Gender Studies, Essays

Bauhaus. Die Kunst der Schüler (Bauhaus. The Art of the Students)

By Ingolf Kern The Bauhaus building in Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius and built in 1926, is the built manifestation of a revolution in design and education. Today, it is accepted worldwide as the ultimate symbol of 'white modernism'. But what is it that gives it its lasting stylistic influence? How is Gropius‘s play with transparency, lightness and colour achieved? How was the building used, and how has it changed over the decades since its inauguration? This architectural guide looks behind the distinctive curtain wall, quite literally examines what lies beneath the building‘s facade and reveals frequently overlooked facets of this illustrious building. In concise chapters, the book takes the reader on a tour of the Bauhaus building and its history and thereby prompts an invitation to visit on a journey of rediscovery. The small and handy books, designed by the Berlin-based graphic designer Eike König, accompany the exhibitions and are also intended as practical guidebooks for the Bauhaus buildings. The Bauhaus paperback 5 on the Bauhaus Dessau is the first to also appear in English. Please note that Rare/Out-of-Print titles are very limited in stock. The Bauhaus Building in Dessau

Edited by Laura Forlano, Molly Wright Steenson and Mike Ananny What would keep the Bauhaus up at night if it were practicing today? A century after its founding by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany, as an “experimental laboratory of the future,” who are the pioneering experimentalists who reinscribe or resist Bauhaus traditions? This book explores the varied legacies, influences, and futures of the Bauhaus. Many of the animating issues of the Bauhaus―its integration of research, teaching, and practice; its experimentation with materials; its democratization of design; its open-minded, heterogeneous approach to ideas, theories, methods, and styles―remain relevant. The contributors to Bauhaus Futures address these but go further, considering issues that design has largely ignored for the last hundred years: gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and disability. Their contributions take the form of essays, photo-essays, interviews, manifestos, diagrams, and even a play. They discuss, among other things, the Bauhaus curriculum and its contemporary offshoots; Bauhaus legacies at the MIT Media Lab, Black Mountain College, and elsewhere; the conflict between the Bauhaus ideal of humanist universalism and current approaches to design concerned with race and justice; designed objects, from the iconic to the precarious; textile and weaving work by women in the Bauhaus and the present day; and design and technology. Bauhaus Postcards: Invitations to the First Exhibition

By Arnt Cobbers In 1956, TIME magazine called him one of the defining “form-givers of the 20th century.” Today, Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) remains a locus classicus of modernism for architects and designers alike. As a Bauhaus pioneer, even his earliest work was marked by a material restraint; the balance of texture, color, and shape; and a symbiosis of local and global, big and small, rough and smooth. In this essential introductory monograph, we survey Breuer’s complete career through some of his most influential projects and ideas, from his landmark tubular furniture to the MoMA Research House to his innovation of “binuclear” housing, splitting living and sleeping areas into separate wings. Along the way, we follow Hungarian-born Breuer’s journey to international acclaim, with featured projects from Germany, France, England, Switzerland, and across the United States contributing to his global status as a modernist maestro. Werner Graeff: Recollection of a Bauhaus Artist

Texts by Markus Brüderlin, William D. Godsey, Jr., Diether Halama, Michael Huey, J.S. Marcus, Joseph Rykwert, Elisabeth Schmuttermeier, Christopher Wilk This sumptuously illustrated volume presents over 180 outstanding Viennese silver objects representing the period from Neoclassicism to the Wiener Werkstätte. Comparing early eighteenth-century works with examples of twentieth-century design and architecture, it offers a fascinating look at Vienna's contribution to the development of modern decorative arts. The authors demonstrate how the roots of modern design go back further than is generally assumed. Achieving remarkable clarity and formal reduction, Viennese Biedermeier designers created everyday objects of silver with astonishingly straightforward and purposeful forms that remain as progressive as ever today. In turn-of-the-century Vienna, Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser drew inspiration from the intellectual legacy of the period in their designs for the Wiener Werkstätte. Many of the ideas introduced by the Viennese avant-garde were later expressed in such movements as the Bauhaus and De Stijl. By examining this history in all its complexity, the book traces the development of the vocabulary for contemporary design. Please note that this item is Out of Stock. SOLD OUT - Viennese Silver: Modern Design 1780-1918

Edited by Lars Müller "The handsome hardcover reprint is most valuable as a historical artifact."—A Daily Dose of Architecture Books When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1924, it was finally possible to publish the first of the Bauhausbücher that Walter Gropius (1883–1969) and László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) had first conceived of in Weimar. The series was intended to give insight into the teachings of the Bauhaus and the possibilities it offered for incorporating modern design into everyday aspects of an ever-more-modern world. First in the series was Gropius’ International Architecture, an overview of the modern architecture of the mid-1920s and an early attempt to articulate what would come to be known as International Style architecture. In a brief preface, Gropius summarized the guiding principles he identified uniting the avant-garde around the world. But the real thrust of the book is visual, with an extensive illustrated section showing buildings in Europe and the Americas. According to Gropius, these illustrations show the “development of a consistent worldview” that dispensed with the prior decorative role of architecture and expressed itself in a new language of exactitude, functionality and geometry. Published for the first time in English, this new edition of the first of the Bauhausbücher is accompanied by a brief scholarly commentary. Presented in a design true to Moholy-Nagy’s original, International Architecture offers readers the opportunity to explore the Bauhaus’ aesthetic and its place in the world as Gropius himself was trying to define them. Walter Gropius: International Architecture (Bauhausbücher 1)

Edited by Lars Müller Although Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was not an active member of the Bauhaus, his name is often mentioned in connection with the art school. Mondrian, cofounder of the De Stijl movement in the Netherlands, called for a strict reduction of visual language to orthogonal composition and primary colors, which met with great approval in Bauhaus circles. His rigorous geometric compositions of verticals and horizontals and strident palette of essential colors were important to numerous Bauhaus masters; Mondrian’s influence appeared in Bauhaus architecture, product design, typography, graphic design, painting and beyond. It is therefore not surprising that Mondrian’s essays on art theory, most of them written for the De Stijl journal, were translated into German and published as number five in the Bauhausbücher series. New Design starts with a philosophical foray into art, which Mondrian describes as a figurative expression of human existence—an expression which will find its natural conclusion in his own concept of a “New Design.” Mondrian then considers the relationship between painting and architecture and dares to take a far-reaching look at the future of Neoplasticism, which he imagines revolutionizing design and architecture around the world. Harry Holtzman's renowned translations of Mondrian's selected essays appear in New Design as a complete compilation for the first time. The publication is true to the content and design of the German first edition of 1925 and includes a brief scholarly commentary. Edited by Walter Gropius, László Moholy-NagyPainter, writer, architect, typographer, art theorist and leader of the De Stijl movement, Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) was one of the great modernist polymaths, and in this volume of the Bauhausbücher, he attempts to make elementary concepts in the visual arts generally comprehensible for a broad audience.Van Doesburg’s book addresses the “modern artist” of his day, who had to deal with both shifting social paradigms and a changing understanding of art and art theory. Unifying a range of disciplines, van Doesburg describes theory as a necessary consequence of creative practice: artists, he says, “do not write about art but from within art.”Principles of Neo-Plastic Art is a revolutionary synthesis of practice and theory.Hardcover68 pages | 1 color, 31 black-and-white imagesLars Müller Publishers, 20217 x 9 inchesISBN 9783037786291 Bauhaus, Neoplasticism

New Works from the Bauhaus Workshops (Bauhausbücher 7)

Edited by Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy. A facsimile of the gorgeous Bauhaus edition of Malevich's classic treatise on Suprematism. Kasimir Malevich (1879–1935) debuted his new creative theory of basic geometric shapes with the publication of his Suprematist manifesto in 1915. He later published a follow-up entitled The Non-Objective World in 1927, which further elucidated his vision of an art that emphasized the “primacy of pure feeling.” With Suprematism, Malevich strove to move his artistic focus away from representation, choosing instead to evoke emotion through a fundamental grammar system of squares, circles and other basic shapes. Though he was not an official member of the Bauhaus, Malevich’s emphasis on simplified forms provided an important link between the school of design and the Suprematist movement. As part of the publisher’s ongoing Bauhausbücher series, Lars Müller’s facsimile edition of Malevich’s text is translated into English with the original design and typography. By Paul Stirton "Succinct, authoritative, well-contextualized. . . .Stirton's narrative throws new light on the most renowned modern typographer of the twentieth century."—Jeremy Aynsley, Journal of Design HistoryAn original account of the life and work of legendary designer Jan Tschichold and his role in the movement in Weimar Germany to create modern graphic designRichly illustrated with images from Jan Tschichold’s little-known private collection of design ephemera, this important book explores a legendary figure in the history of modern graphic design through the artists, ideas, and texts from the Bauhaus that most influenced him. Tschichold (1902–1974), a prolific designer, writer, and theorist, stood at the forefront of a revolution in visual culture that made printed material more elemental and dynamic. His designs were applied to everyday graphics, from billboard advertisements and business cards to book jackets and invoices. This handsome volume offers a new understanding of Tschichold’s work, and of the underlying theories of the artistic movement he helped to form, by analyzing his collections: illustrations, advertisements, magazines, and books by well-known figures, such as Kurt Schwitters, El Lissitzky, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and László Moholy-Nagy, and lesser-known artist-designers, including Willi Baumeister, Max Burchartz, Walter Dexel, and Piet Zwart. This book also charts the development of the New Typography, a broad-based movement across Central Europe that included “The Ring,” a group formed by Schwitters in 1927. Tschichold played a crucial role in defining this movement, documenting the theory and practice in his most influential book, The New Typography (1928), still regarded as a seminal text of graphic design.Paperback 272 pages BGC Yale Books, 20197 x 8.8 inchesISBN 9780300243956Graphic Design, Typography

By Robert Elton Brooker III and Adam ErdeszForeword by Marton Orosz “Albert Kner is a hidden treasure of the design world, and deserves far greater recognition for his many achievements. This book presents not only his later, important work in package design and consumer research, but also explores his extensive work in graphic design when he was still living in Europe. Brooker and Erdész have done a superb job in presenting Kner’s remarkable life in all its phases; their narrative is supported by 112 inspiring illustrations in black-and-white and full color. A wonderful book from start to finish.” —Bruce Kennett, author and designer of W. A. Dwiggins: A Life in Design Albert Kner (1899-1976) invented hundreds of things we encounter in our daily lives, such as the cardboard six pack and the flip top cigarette box. Yet his name is almost unknown. He started his life in Hungary in the book arts, having designed and typeset his first book at age 12. His artistic training was interrupted by World War I, where he suffered a paralyzing war injury that forced him to tape one eye shut in order to sleep. He did not enter the family printing business, a decision that saved his life, but also led to decades of artistic struggle as a designer of books, posters, packaging, stage sets, and furniture. In 1940, with limited English, Albert emigrated to Chicago with his wife and two young children. Almost instantly he was hired as Design Director of the largest cardboard manufacturer in America.
