Artists

Introduction by Nicholas Fox WeberTexts by Josef Albers, Elaine de Kooning, and Colm Tóibín Using minimal means—paint straight from the tube, applied meticulously with a palette knife—and a focused selection of colors, Josef Albers’s sustained, serial investigation into rhythm, mood, and spatial movement is explored in this lavishly produced catalogue that looks solely at his respective grey and yellow paintings, exploring two distinct color palettes pervasive to his oeuvre. Highlighting the rich diversity of effects Albers drew from a narrow range of colors, this publication centers around the groundbreaking Homage to the Square (A) (1950), the inaugural painting in the series that would occupy the artist until his death in 1976. The pairing of two palettes—black, white, and grey and an array of yellows—stems in part from Albers’s 1964 series of lithographs, Midnight and Noon, which brought together these two opposing color sets in a single portfolio. Together they address the limitless possibilities the artist found in color and form in relation to light. The impossible simultaneity of “midnight” and “noon” moreover speaks to Albers’s transcending of what he called “factual facts” in favor of the play of perception and illusion possible in art. Opening with an introduction by Nicholas Fox Weber, executive director of The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, that contextualizes these works and their color palettes, this volume also includes Albers’s own writing on Homage to the Square. Additionally, Elaine de Kooning’s historic text and Colm Tóibín’s recent writing explore this body of work from different perspectives and time periods. Published on the occasion of exhibitions at David Zwirner’s New York and London galleries in 2016 and 2017, this beautifully illustrated publication looks at one of the most influential abstract painters of the twentieth century. Please note that Rare/Out-of-Print titles are very limited in stock. By Tobias G. Natter, Christiane Druml and Markus MüllerTaking Klimt’s lost painting Medicine as a starting point, this authoritative volume examines the relationship between art, medicine, and modern thought in Vienna around 1900.When Gustav Klimt unveiled Medicine in 1901, the work sparked outrage by challenging conventional ideas about science, progress, and the human condition, becoming one of the defining cultural controversies of its time. Withdrawn by the artist and destroyed during World War II, Medicine remains one of the most fascinating lost masterpieces of modern art. Through paintings, drawings, archival photographs, and restored imagery, this volume reconstructs the history, meaning, and legacy of the work while placing it within the intellectual ferment of fin-de-siècle Vienna. Essays explore the connections between art, anatomy, psychology, philosophy, evolutionary theory, and modern medical science.Leading scholars reveal Klimt’s engagement with the ideas reshaping his era, in particular microscopical cell examination, Darwinian concepts of human evolution, and the discovery of the unconscious. Gustav Klimt and Medicine: The Flow of Life

By James A. van Dyke “Van Dyke is undoubtedly one of the foremost experts on the art world of the Weimar Republic. In his groundbreaking new study, he focuses on Otto Dix, one of the leading―and perhaps the most radical―painters of the era. In a paradigmatic way, the author demonstrates what a ‘leftist,’ critical art history can be today and how necessary it is. Detailed description, the ‘material turn,’ and the socio-historical analysis of the artistic field complement and illuminate one another. Van Dyke’s keen eye for detail leads to a fundamental reexamination of Otto Dix’s art in general.”—Olaf Peters, Martin-Luther University, Halle-WittenbergHow small details in the paintings of Otto Dix materialize the realities of a modern German artist.Offering a fresh look at German art during a period of extraordinary transition and precarity, James A. van Dyke focuses on overlooked but critically significant details in works completed by Otto Dix between 1919 and 1936. A small lump of paint, a monogram, an almost invisible self-portrait, the verso of a drawing, a patch of discoloration, and a web of fine cracks—van Dyke reveals such details, hidden in plain sight, as coded dialogue through which Dix addressed audiences and art-world insiders amid the combative world of cultural production in Weimar Germany. Sly, cutting, and provocative, these are the material traces of social relationships between the painter and those who represented threats to his professional ambition: an avant-garde mentor and rival, an increasingly skeptical critic, a prominent bourgeois photographer, and a local Nazi authority.Proving that small things offer insight into the big picture, this book highlights Dix’s satirical, transgressive work as nuanced and polyvocal, reflecting the complex fields of power and economics in which the field of art is located.Hardcover296 pages |12 color plates and 120 halftonesUniversity of Chicago Press, 20267 x 10 inchesISBN 9780226848549Monograph, German Art History

The Great Artists: Paul Klee

Edited by Frank SchmidtWith Contributions by Rebecca Duckwitz, Simone Ewald, and Wolfgang WernerWith Essays by Frank Schmidt This oversize volume examines the career of Paula Modersohn-Becker, a pioneering Expressionist who was largely unknown during her lifetime. Published in celebration of the 150th birthday of Paula Modersohn-Becker, an artist who remains one of the most important figures of the German avant-garde, this book examines her artistic development in depth and presents works from all phases of her career, with a particular focus on her early work, which has hitherto received little attention or recognition. Modersohn-Becker was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, and her works influenced such major figures as Georg Baselitz and Chantal Joffe. But how did Paula Becker, born in Dresden in 1876, become the artist Paula Modersohn-Becker? Numerous works from renowned collections and private holdings illustrate this fascinating story and demonstrate that she was following her own artistic path even in her student years. It was this path that made her the legend she became, celebrated in literature, film, and art. This oversized and lavishly illustrated publication celebrates the beloved artist with large reproductions of her most iconic works as well as seldom shown works. Edited by Christian Bauer and Bernadette Reinhold The legendary rivalry between two exceptional artists of Austrian Modernism, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele, a rivalry that sparked artistic masterpieces. This lavishly illustrated publication looks at the relationship of the two towering figures of Austrian Modernism, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele. They were rivals and masterful networkers, and their race for success and recognition opens up a previously untold chapter of modern art. Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele were rising stars in early twentieth-century Vienna, and their early work laid the foundations for Austrian Expressionism. Their rivalry is as exceptional as their networks and artworks. When Egon Schiele died in 1918 at just twenty-eight years old, his attempt at reconciliation with Kokoschka having failed, the elder artist still had six decades ahead of him, during which he would be celebrated internationally as a major Austrian figure. But he never escaped Schiele’s shadow—quite the contrary. With historical documents and art reproductions, this publication shows in detail the feud that these two artists fought. Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka: Networkers and Rivals

Edited by Nadine Franci and Nina ZimmerWith Essays by Nadine Franci Presents an innovative new perspective on a star of classical modernism. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s (1880–1938) art is characterized by austere beauty and bold coloration. However, his creative approach extended far beyond the canvas: he saw the presentation and viewing of his works as integral elements of his art. This book shows Kirchner’s complete oeuvre through his own eyes. The world’s first major retrospective of Kirchner’s work was curated by the artist himself in 1933. In presenting the works, he created an exhibition entirely according to his own taste. This volume allows us to look over his shoulder once again and see how he approached both his artistic ideas and his curatorial strategies. Kirchner’s work continues to be exemplary of early twentieth-century art and one of the undisputed highlights of classical modernism. By Barbara Hess, Cathrin Klingsöhr-Leroy,Karin H. Grimme, Klaus Honnef, and Norbert Wolf “This comprehensive overview incorporates an impressive range of reproductions.”-The Independent Explore five movements that revolutionized art: Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art. From Monet’s shimmering water lilies and the wild dreams of Dalí to Lichtenstein’s high-impact comic-book aesthetics, this collection unpacks the rebellious ideas and works that reframed how the world views art itself. A comprehensive volume covering five seminal genres that shaped art, from the late 19th century and well into the 20th: Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Each approach was distinct in aesthetic and philosophy, but all had immediate impact and enduring influence. Many great names were indelibly associated with one, some explored several during their careers. Impressionism, led by Monet and Renoir, focused on light and color, capturing fleeting moments and challenging academic art's rigidity. Expressionism was driven by artists like Edvard Munch and Wassily Kandinsky to convey raw emotion, distorting reality to reflect the angst of human experience. Surrealists, like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, explored the subconscious, dreams, and the irrational, blending reality with fantasy across art, literature, and film. With Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko leading the charge, Abstract Expressionism emphasized spontaneity and emotion through bold, gestural brushstrokes, and established New York as the post-war art world’s new Mecca. Finally, artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol gained fame and dominated the zeitgeist by synthesizing advertising, pop culture, and high art into Pop Art. Though diverse, these movements collectively pushed the boundaries of creativity, redefined artistic expression, and altered the trajectory of contemporary art. This lavish edition celebrates their stories, featuring more than 250 high-quality reproductions and texts, exploring how each movement's ideas and innovations transformed art forever. Van Gogh: Masters of Art

Edited by Susanne Gaensheimer, Isabella Malz, and Anke Kempkes Dazzling, erotic, groundbreaking—the queer alternative history of modernism. Desire, eroticism, playing with gender—these qualities in the works of queer artists are not regarded here as external to the creative process, but rather as foundational. By approaching the art through a perspective of queer aesthetics, the aim is to discover the visual worlds of hitherto little-known figures of international modernism, from Eastern and Western Europe and North and South America. This volume reflects how the artists experiment with alternative lifestyles to produce new visual languages, perspectives, and queer aesthetics. Modern utopias of abolishing the gender binary, queer avant-gardes, and the potential in queer readings of abstraction are some of the compelling topics presented in this volume, which also recounts the history of queer lives during war, persecution, and resistance. von Arthur Schnitzler mit acht Zeichnungen von Egon Schiele einem Essay von Hilde Spiel Als 1926 die wohl vieldeutigste von Arthur Schnitzlers Erzählungen zum erstenmal erschien, durchlief die Wiener Gesellschaft ein Schauder. Also available in English.Hardcover112 pages Text in GermanInsel Verlag, 2023Originally Published, 19264.72 x 0.47 x 7.24 inchesISBN 9783458192381Books in German, Novella

By Christopher Long Christopher Long’s latest volume of essays on the prestigious 19th-century architect, essayist and progenitor of modernism. Architectural historian and leading voice on Adolf Loos, Christopher Long returns with another commentary on the Austrian pioneer of modern architecture. Adolf Loos (1870–1933), an opponent of ornamentation on buildings, designed buildings in Vienna that contrasted with the popular Art Nouveau and Secession styles. In this anthology of eight essays, Long takes on the meanings of Loos’ writings and design work, the cultural world in which he was embedded, and how he was regarded by the critics and public. Long exposes and explodes old myths about Loos, fostering in the process a new, brilliant and compelling view of one of modern architecture’s key protagonists. Edited with text by Megan Fontanella. Foreword by Mariët Westermann. Text by Victoria Horrocks, Isabelle Jansen, Iris Müller-Westermann, Dorothy Price. A new look at a vanguard modernist artist who reimagined the still life, landscape and portrait genres This landmark publication coincides with the major Guggenheim New York exhibition of works by the remarkable German Expressionist Gabriele Münter. Münter’s painting practice between 1908 and 1920 is the central focus of the exhibition and accompanying book. The study also illuminates her lesser-known later work and includes significant examples of her photography taken during earlier extensive travels in the United States. Münter was notably a cofounder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a loose and transnational confederation of progressive artists and other creatives, with whom she probed the expressive potential of color and the symbolic resonance of forms. Her introspective portraits during World War II capture the “new woman” and explore questions of gender identity. Highlighting more than 90 paintings, drawings and photographs, this publication not only traces Münter’s pioneering and understudied practice but also challenges accepted historical narratives that have tended to sideline women artists. Reproductions of archival material appear alongside choice selections of the artist's sketches, prints and reverse glass paintings. Thematic texts by renowned scholars explore identity, place, belonging and the embodied experience of modernist women artists during this period. Gabriele Münter (1877–1962) was at the forefront of the German avant-garde in the early 20th century and exhibited extensively at galleries and salons throughout Europe during her lifetime. Along with her artistic colleague and one-time partner, Vasily Kandinsky, Münter was a founder of the influential Expressionist group of artists, Der Blaue Reiter. By Elisabeth Dutz This revelatory volume uncovers the significant friendship that shaped Egon Schiele’s most personal and provocative works. Between 1910 and his death in 1918, Egon Schiele cultivated a close, formative relationship with Dr. Erwin von Graff—a Vienna-based gynecologist who would become both friend and collaborator. Egon Schiele: Portrait of Dr. Erwin von Graff is the first publication to examine this vital connection in depth, revealing how Graff’s medical practice and personal support influenced one of the most expressive and psychologically charged bodies of work in modern art.Through Graff’s private diary and newly uncovered archival material, art historian Elisabeth Dutz traces a compelling narrative of creative exchange and trust. Graff granted Schiele access to his patients—pregnant women, newborns, and postpartum mothers—opening a world that Schiele captured with raw, emotional intensity. Their friendship, which began with a painted portrait offered in gratitude for a favor, evolved into a lasting exchange that deeply influenced Schiele’s exploration of the human body, emotional vulnerability, and the complexities of life and death.Published in connection with a special exhibition at the Neue Galerie New York, this beautifully produced volume is richly illustrated with Schiele’s works from this period, as well as never-before-seen photographs and documents. It offers new insight into the artist’s inner world and illuminates a significant chapter in his development. A must-have for admirers of Schiele, this book deepens our understanding of his oeuvre and the relationships that helped shape it. By Romy Cockx, Robin Schuldenfrei and Lara Steinhäußer Exploring fashion and interior design through a gender lens, from the Victorian era to contemporary designers like Martin Margiela and Raf Simons Fashion & Interiors: A Gendered Affair explores the relationship between fashion and interiors from a gender perspective. In the second half of the nineteenth century, bourgeois ladies embellished both their bodies and their homes with drapes, fringing and ruches. Male designers such as Henry van de Velde and Josef Hoffmann waged war on that decorative excess and designed women’s clothing and interiors as part of a well-thought-out total work of art. Fashion designers Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin drew inspiration from this approach and used interior design to create a powerful brand for their fashion houses. The impact of clothing also resonated with modernist (interior) architects such as Adolf Loos, Lilly Reich and Le Corbusier. This complex history is reflected in surprising ways in the visual language and creations of contemporary fashion designers such as Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela, and Raf Simons. Gustav Klimt: Forester's House in Weissenbach II (Garden) [Giclée Print]

Written and illustrated by Xavier Coste Unveils the Austro-Hungarian artist's relationship with colleagues and models and the passions that drove him further into his craft. ―Douglas Rednour, Library Journal Schiele's brief, controversial career is examined with bold insights in this graphic biography... Coste doesn't shy away from the emotional brutality of Schiele's story. In fact, he embraces it, weaving elements of Schiele's eerie, idiosyncratic paintings with his own artistic style. Drawing on the same Expressionist techniques that drove Schiele's artistic passions, Coste conjures a story that beckons the reader to see the world through its subject's eyes. ―Publishers Weekly The story of the artistic genius who provoked early 20th-century tolerance. Egon Schiele is an evocative depiction based on the life of the Austro-Hungarian artist whose short career spanned the turn of the 20th century. Schiele (1890-1918) was a painter known for full-frontal portraits of naked women (and on many occasions, himself). They were stark and disturbing. He painted his subjects in gaunt, twisting and unnatural poses. Their voyeuristic tone and blatant eroticism outraged society, landing him in prison for 24 days. Nevertheless, his works would have a strong influence on the development of expressionist art. The book focuses on the artist's creative years, the development of his talent, his relationships with other artists, including Gustav Klimt, the women in his life, and his obsession with making provocative art. Quickly following Schiele's early successes were his failures. In the end, it was the Spanish flu that killed him at the tragically young age of 28. Egon Schiele is a seductive and intimate portrait of an artistic genius who was both lauded and condemned for his brilliance. His works, at one time judged to be disgusting and perverse, are now considered masterpieces and are in museums all around the world. Egon Schiele: His Life and Death

By Helen Adkins and Ines Otschik Christian Schad created what were probably the world’s first artistic photograms and abstract photographs. The third volume of his catalogue raisonné is dedicated to his so-called ‘Schadographs’. Schad arranged materials – including waste paper, fabric remnants, or even lint – on light-sensitive paper and exposed these with the help of the sun shining on the windowsill. The results are abstract compositions in the experimental spirit of Dada. Hardcover368 pagesWienand, 20199.5 x 12.5 inchesISBN 9783879099344Monograph

By Alessandra Comini ''This erudite, mostly engaging self-portrait charts the making of an art historian and professional 'seer,' whose passion and wit enabled her to become a noted teacher and scholar at Southern Methodist University. Comini helped unearth centuries of overlooked women in art and wrote landmark studies of the Austrian painter Egon Schiele and of musical iconography. For someone engaged in a life of the mind, she has lived much of it in motion, and the art of travel and close consideration of cultural context have been her keys to learning and teaching. She is at her riveting best when she reveals her discoveries about Schiele in his Vienna prison cell, Winckelmann in Rome and Trieste, the composer Edvard Grieg in Norway, and the painter Akseli Gallen-Kalella in Finland. Her short essays dazzle the most when they reveal her keen eye, such as when she discerns how the German artist Kathe Kollwitz, in a bust of herself, 'used the resolute features of her own aging face as a spiritual topography for courage and resignation.''' ―Booklist Overflowing with passion for her work as a scholar and teacher, Distinguished Professor of Art History Emerita at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, Alessandra Comini reminisces through six decades as an unconventional art historian in this illustrated memoir. The author of award-winning books on Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, and Ludwig van Beethoven, Comini draws on her sixty years of daily journals, sharing research-related anecdotes as she reflects on the formation and flowering of her distinguished career. Beginning with her colorful background as a refugee from Franco's Spain, then Mussolini's Italy, she describes her music-loving family's sometimes humorous, sometimes painful adjustment to a World War II Texas. A series of fortuitous experiences at Interlochen's National Music Camp, Barnard College, the University of California at Berkeley, and Columbia University later leads to what would ultimately be a turning point in her life as well as in Schiele scholarship. She discovered the actual cell in which Schiele had been imprisoned in a provincial Austrian jail half a century earlier. Comini invites readers to join her in the same zestful and persistent pursuit of cultural history that has repeatedly earned her the honor of being voted "outstanding" professor, by her students at Columbia University and later at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Her research and quests take the reader around the world and back. From the islands of Corfu, Madeira, R gen, and Tahiti to the cities of Lisbon, Rome, Oslo, and St. Petersburg, Comini pursues such diverse and distinctive personalities as Rosa Bonheur, Gustav and Alma Mahler, Pablo Picasso, Eleonora Duse, Edvard Munch, K the Kollwitz, Vaslav Nijinski, and Egon Schiele. Alessandra Comini's memoir will inspire readers with its sincere and compelling account of an extraordinary life and career still passionately in progress. Retirement for her has meant discovering a joyful new profession: writing art history murder mystery novels that take her eighty-year-old pseudonymous heroine Megan Crespi from the top of Europe down to Antarctica in pursuit of murderous purloiners of artworks by Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka, Munch, and Kollwitz. In Passionate Pursuit

Edited by Christian Bauer This book highlights the intimate relationship between landscape and portraiture in the work of the Austrian Expressionist artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918).Plants, natural environments, and townscapes determine the spaces Egon Schiele created in his paintings, and they also reflect the rich symbolism he employed that is centered around the human condition. In particular, plants are often endowed with an allegorical meaning. Flowers and trees assume the role of portrait subjects and convey an almost human appearance. Schiele’s landscapes always represent more than their apparent subject matter. His portrayal of nature and his rendering of towns and trees epitomize the life cycle and the human condition. This catalogue, accompanying a spectacular exhibition on view at the Neue Galerie New York, will investigate the importance of landscape in the artist’s work. The contributing authors are internationally distinguished experts on Schiele’s landscapes and representatives of museums and universities in Europe and the United States. Gustav Klimt: 50 Masterpieces Explored

Edited with text by Theodora Vischer Text by Tere Arcq, Andreas Beyer, Tamar Garb, Peter Geimer, Anna-Carola Krausse, Sylvie Patry, Uwe M. Schneede, Jennifer Thompson, and Hilda Trujillo. Gender interventions and formal innovations in female portraiture, through works by Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Lotte Laserstein, Frida Kahlo, Alice Neel, Marlene Dumas, Cindy Sherman, Elizabeth Peyton This superbly conceived publication looks at nine women artists whose careers were devoted primarily to portraiture, analyzing both the work they produced and the unique ways in which each artist captured her subjects’ likenesses and the spaces they inhabited. These artists represent the development of modernist art since 1870; each has made significant contributions to art history as they complicate long-held notions of the gaze and explore the relationship between the self, the subject and the artist. Close-Up examines women painters and photographers who are known primarily for self-portraiture, such as Paula Modersohn-Becker, Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman; it also looks at female artists who depicted the daily lives of women and children in a creative environment that was largely disinterested in such subjects, such as Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Lotte Laserstein. Still other women—Alice Neel, Marlene Dumas and Elizabeth Peyton—embrace familiarity completely and depict friends and family as well as famous figures in their paintings. In essays by nine different authors, these artists and their subjects are considered individually and as part of a chronology of modern portraiture, with an emphasis on the dynamics of gender. By Yoshio Futagawa Designed by Adolf Loos in his later years, these two houses are twin examples of the architect’s plain, unadorned style of architecture, despite their difference in size and budget. Both Villa Moller (1926–27) in Vienna and Villa Müller (1928–30) in Prague are illustrative of his ‘Raumplan’ design method. Loos applied a utilitarian approach in using the entire floor plan that would only later receive greater appreciation with the advent of postmodernism, an innovative spatialisation comprising sequences of spaces drawn in three dimensions. Photographed by Yoshio Futagawa, the two houses and the spatial brilliance of Loos come to life in an eclectic symbiosis with modernism. Residential Masterpieces 25: Adolf Loos Villa Muller / Villa Moller

By Adolf Loos Throughout his life Adolf Loos raised his eloquent voice against the squandering of fine materials, frivolous ornamentation and unnecessary embellishments. His admirers consider him to be the inspiration for all modern architecture. Yet, few are acquainted with his amusing, incisive, critical and philosophical literary work reflecting on applied design and the essence of clothing in fin de siècle Vienna. Adolf Loos often had a radical, yet innovative outlook on life that made him such a nuisance for many of his contemporaries. His provocative musings on many subjects portray him as a man of varied interests and intellectual refinement as well as possessing a keen sense of style, which still has value today. For the first time the ‘Loos Dress Code’ is available in English. Included is a short social/historical look as the birth of Modernism in Adolf Loos’ Vienna. Why A Man Should Be Well Dressed

By Robin Schuldenfrei "One of the most interesting and essential texts on modernism to be written in the last decade. . . . Schuldenfrei has made a fairly niche art historical subject incredibly approachable with brilliant but accessible text. . . . [Objects in Exile] is a phenomenally well researched and important text on the subject and should be required reading for anyone interested in modern art and design."---Angelina Lippert, New York Journal of Books "A thought-provoking read that sheds light on the hidden narratives of objects and their profound influence on our collective heritage."-- "Metropolis" In the fraught years leading up to World War II, many modern artists and architects emigrated from continental Europe to the United States and Britain. The experience of exile infused their modernist ideas with new urgency and forced them to use certain materials in place of others, modify existing works, and reconsider their approach to design itself. In Objects in Exile, Robin Schuldenfrei reveals how the process of migration was crucial to the development of modernism, charting how modern art and architecture was shaped by the need to constantly face—and transcend—the materiality of things. Taking readers from the prewar era to the 1960s, Schuldenfrei explores the objects these émigrés brought with them, what they left behind, and the new works they completed in exile. She argues that modernism could only coalesce with the abandonment of national borders in a process of emigration and resettlement, and brings to life the vibrant postwar period when avant-garde ideas came together and emerged as mainstream modernism. Examining works by Walter Gropius, László Moholy-Nagy, Lucia Moholy, Herbert Bayer, Anni and Josef Albers, and others, Schuldenfrei demonstrates the social impact of art objects produced in exile. Shedding critical light on how the pressures of dislocation irrevocably altered the course of modernism, Objects in Exile shows how artists and designers, forced into exile by circumstances beyond their control, changed in unexpected ways to meet the needs and contexts of an uncertain world.
