Douglas Sirk’s first major melodrama and his first significant box office success.

Directed by Douglas Sirk (1936)
German; English Subtitles. 100 minutes.

After insurance fraud forces Hanna and her husband to flee Germany, they leave their young son Peter behind and seek a new life in America. Following her husband’s death, Hanna returns to Germany determined to find her child, only to discover that Peter has been taken in by the wealthy Garvenberg family. Conductor Garvenberg welcomed Peter into the household in hopes of repairing his troubled marriage, but the child has done little to ease the couple’s conflicts. Unaware of Hanna’s true identity, the family hires her as Peter’s nurse. She quickly wins the boy’s affection, while Garvenberg himself develops feelings for her, setting the stage for a complicated emotional conflict.

Schlussakkord was Douglas Sirk’s first major melodrama and his first significant box office success. The film demonstrates the sophisticated use of music, camera movement, and visual composition that would become central to his later work. Its emotional drama also anticipates the highly stylized melodramas that defined Sirk’s career and later success in Hollywood where he settled after leaving Germany in 1937.
