The Bohemian-Austrian poet and novelist is known for his lyricism and vivid use of language. We are presenting the “First Elegy” in the original German and in translation so that listeners may experience the sound of this great work. The Duino Elegies have an intense spiritual quality, right from the first sentence, which is a kind of agonized appeal to the heavens: “Who, if I cried, would hear me…”
