Co-founders of the German modern-art movement Der Blauer Reiter, Gabriele Münter and Vasily Kandinsky are both extraordinary artists and passionate lovers. But while Kandinsky enjoys fame, admiration, and artistic and financial recognition, Münter struggles with her life by his side. The relationship becomes increasingly complicated, tiring, and fraught. Told from Münter’s perspective, this film explores the untold chapters of her life, her love affair with Kandinsky, and her crucial role in the avant-garde Blue Rider movement, which revolutionized the art world.


This screening is presented as part of the Summer 2025 Filmbar Series, “Burning Passions: Love and Creativity.” Inspired by works from the museum’s collection, the Neue Galerie presents a series of films exploring the intersection of art, passion, and personal turmoil, bringing to life the intense, often complicated relationship between some of the most influential artists and thinkers in history.
